Getting more from your leadership than your technical skills

Scott Eblin, speaker and author of “The Next Level”, in his post on Govexec writes that, at some point in your career, your leadership skills need to trump your technical skills if you want to make the biggest possible impact. Eblin represents this in a simple graph: the higher you rise in leadership, the leverage in getting higher achievements comes from spending less time on your technical skills and more time exercising your leadership abilities. Here is a list of high “leadership intensive” activities he has collected by asking his readers to give their answer to this question: “What is it, given the leadership role that you are in, that only you can do?”.

Here’s what he did, why it works and how it can make you a better leader.

1.   Get out of the office and circulate among the troops:
Lincoln knew people were his best source of information. And accessibility built trust.
Guess what? Modern business theory backs him up. These days the management gurus call it “Managing by Wandering Around.”

2.      Persuade rather than coerce:
Does the modern research agree? Yes.
The #1 thing Harvard Business School teaches it’s MBA students about negotiation is “They need to like you”.

3.      Lead by being led:

Self irony: how to fight the Excess of Success

To become a successful individual has never been an easy task, and has always cost many sacrifices and endeavours to those who have undertaken the effort. That’s why those few who succeed in life, and have plenty of proofs of their success, are most of the time inclined to show it off to the rest of the world.

“Once you get at the top, you’ll stay at the top” they think, which is true most of the times. But even if being airy and full of it will never undermine a CV full of shiny stuff, it can cause irreparable harm to what other people think of you. Humbleness is not required to get to success and leadership, but since a successful leader needs to be loved – not just feared – by his team, humbleness is essential to keep being successful and get always more of it.

A practical and effective way for a smart guy to show people he understands the value of staying humble is self irony and understatement: it helps minimizing the person without undermining his role, thus showing to a team that the leader himself is able to grasp the difference between the two. It is also a cunning way to keep a team respecting Leadership without fearing the Leader.

What is true leadership? Can it be taught?

During TEDxESCP, Bob Davids – entrepreneur and visionary – explains the difference between leadership and management and stresses the importance of leadership without ego.
According to Mr. Davids, management implies control and if you push people you cannot predict what they will do.
Analyzing examples of famous leaders like Gandhi, he affirms that if you can lead people and get them to follow you, then you have the skills to be a leader.
But leadership is a gift and cannot be bought.
Leadership without ego is thus the most valuable commodity and the rarest in the planet.
