A very informative website. It’s amazing how Twiplomacy has spread around the world. 🙂

Italy has adapted well to using the Internet. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the famous Unità di Crisi (Crisis Unit). Through its website and Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Unit%C3%A0-di-Crisi-Ministero-Affari-Esteri/140595539316906 Italian Nationals that travel abroad can remain informed and be quickly assisted in case of emergency by registering their travel plans with the dedicated website: http://www.viaggiaresicuri.it/ There are even accompanying smartphone applications for the major operating systems; https://www.dovesiamonelmondo.it/index.php?id=71

Unfortunately, we are falling behind in the Twitter arena. Compared to our European partners we have zero activity via our vast network of Embassies and Consulates. I believe that we must use all available technology and resources to help inform and assist our Italian Nationals and foreigners in dire straits when travelling in certain “less friendly” countries.

At zero-cost and low maintenance, I don’t understand why every diplomatic and consular mission doesn’t activate an account? Twitter is quickly becoming a serious tool and it is here to stay.
