Achieving the best results

The best results are achieved by using the right amount of effort in the right place at the right time. And this right amount is usually less than we think we need. In other words, the less unnecessary effort you put into learning, the more successful you’ll be… the key to faster learning is to use appropriate effort. Greater effort can exacerbate faulty patterns of action. Doing the wrong thing with more intensity rarely improves the situation. Learning something new often requires us to unlearn something old.

Assertive communication

Assertive behaviour allows us to maintain effectively our point of view, without prevarication of or suppleness to the counterpart’s position. An assertive way of communication goes beyond the perfect balance between two poles: passivity and aggressiveness. It involves the conversation partner and aims at finding a common solution.

Among other things, to achieve assertive communication it is essential to:

– Listen proactively (not avoiding eye contact, using gestures to express approval);
– Summarize and reformulate what has been said by the interlocutor;
– Share one’s point of view;
– Confirm that there is a relationship with the interlocutor that goes beyond the issue under discussion;
– Show empathy and propose to solve together.

Creativity for Managers

The idea that Creativity is needed only by artists and dreamers is long gone. Nowadays managers are aware that to run a business, an administration, an office a lot of skills are required: flexibility, intuition, vision, inventiveness. In one word what managers need is Creativity.

Hubert Jaoui understood that almost thirty years ago and is spending his life explaining to others what creativity is and how useful it can be.

The (honest) truth about dishonesty

Dan Ariely, Professor of Psychology and Behavioural Economics, examines the mechanisms at work behind dishonest behaviour, and the implications this has for all aspects of our social and political lives.

Ariely sets our behaviors in two opposing motivations: we would like to view ourselves as honest, value-driven people, but we would also like to make as much money as possible or achieve other goals to get us ahead in life. In order to reconcile these dueling aims, we employ what he calls “cognitive flexibility”: the ability to minimize the extent of our cheating in order to still view ourselves as wonderful human beings.
